Kedarnath is not just a trek — it is a journey inward. Nestled at 3,583 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, the ancient Shiva temple draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year. If you're planning your first visit in 2025, this guide covers everything from the best time to visit to what to pack.
When to Visit Kedarnath
The Kedarnath temple opens every year in late April or early May (on Akshaya Tritiya) and closes on Bhai Dooj in November, before the Himalayan winter sets in. The doors for 2025 are expected to open on 2 May 2025.
The best time to visit is either May–June (before the monsoon) or September–October (after monsoon, crisp weather, fewer crowds). Avoid July–August if possible — the route can be dangerous due to landslides.
- May–June: Flowers in bloom, snow on peaks, moderate crowds
- July–August: Monsoon season — landslide risk, avoid if possible
- September–October: Clear skies, best views, ideal for trekkers
- November: Temple closing ceremony — very special atmosphere
The Trek Route: Gaurikund to Kedarnath
The main trekking route starts from Gaurikund (1,982m) and covers approximately 16–18 km to reach the temple. The trek typically takes 6–8 hours going up and 4–5 hours coming down.
Key Checkpoints on the Route
- Gaurikund (1,982m): Starting point with a natural hot spring
- Jungle Chatti (2,650m): First major rest stop, tea and snacks available
- Bheembali (3,111m): Midway point, GMVN canteen and medical post
- Lincholi (3,175m): Helipad point, great views of surrounding peaks
- Kedarnath Base Camp (3,583m): Final stretch to the temple
"The moment the temple comes into view — that gold shikhar against a white sky — nothing prepares you for it. You just stop walking."
— A pilgrim from Lucknow, October 2024
How to Reach Gaurikund
Most travellers fly into Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, or take an overnight train to Haridwar or Rishikesh. From there, it is a 7–9 hour drive to Gaurikund via Rudraprayag and Sonprayag.
The last motorable road ends at Sonprayag. From there, shared jeeps run to Gaurikund (approximately ₹40 per person). Private vehicles are not allowed beyond Sonprayag.
Where to Stay
Accommodation options exist at multiple points along the route and at the top. Book well in advance, especially during peak season.
- Gaurikund: Budget guesthouses, GMVN Tourist Rest House
- Bheembali: GMVN tented accommodation
- Kedarnath: GMVN Bhavan, Dorms by Devasthanam Board, private dharamshalas
Staying a night at Kedarnath itself is highly recommended — the early morning 4 AM puja with mountains glowing in first light is an experience you will carry for life.
What to Pack
- Warm layers — temperature drops to 0°C at night even in summer
- Waterproof jacket and trekking shoes with ankle support
- Trekking poles (rentable at Gaurikund for ₹100–150)
- Sunscreen SPF 50+, sunglasses, lip balm
- Personal medicines and a basic first-aid kit
- Reusable water bottle — stay hydrated above 3,000m
- Headlamp with extra batteries (for early morning puja)
- Aadhaar card or ID proof — mandatory for registration
Practical Tips for First-Timers
Altitude sickness is real. Spend at least one night at Rishikesh or Haridwar before heading up, and another night at Gaurikund to acclimatise. Ascend slowly — do not push yourself to finish in one rushed go.
Register online on the official Devasthanam Board portal before travelling. Registration is free but mandatory. Biometric registration is also done at Sonprayag.

Pony, palki (palanquin) and helicopter services are available for those who cannot trek. Helicopter tickets must be booked well in advance — they sell out weeks before peak season.
